Why is Art so important? American artist and educator, Robert Henri said, “Art when really understood is the province of every human being. It is simply a question of doing things, anything, well. It is not an outside, extra thing. When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creature. The world would stagnate without him, and the world would be beautiful with him.” Art is not just an extra thing, it is the activity that allows us to burn the creative flame we have within all of us. There is a misconception regarding creativity and talent. Creativity is the ability to make up a thought in ones mind. For example, let’s think of a cat. Right there you created that thought and it had color or was it a drawing? Did you put the cat in an environment? All that is part of your creativity. Everyone is born with creativity. The problem is learning to bring that thought into the physical world. That is where talent comes in. Talent is a degree of skill and it can be learned. Once you put the two together you become a more confident and effective artist. Now the great by-product of being an artist is that it can spill in other areas of your life. For example, solving problems faster, thinking outside the box and looking at things in a whole new way. Taking classes with Susie and her being my teacher through The Gluck Method was life changing. She really has a way of building up your confidence and getting you to understand what your are learning. She also had a great sense of humor and is a lot of fun! Working with Susie has been a great experience for me. As an artist, I am constantly working towards improving my skills and drawing ability. I have always searched for mentors who I can learn from and when I met Susie, she trained me using Larry Gluck’s Method. My drawing ability skyrocketed overnight! Many artists have struggled simply just to be proud of their work. I used to spend days or even months working on a painting or drawing, only to end up with mediocre results, inaccurate proportions, and incorrect lighting. I am a former student of The Gluck Method and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Susie was my teacher, she is an amazing artist and wonderful person.
